“Casa Jazmin” An old house on the hillside overlooking the village of Blanca, served as both my workspace and exhibition space for 2 weeks during my stay at AADK. The house is overgrown by jasmine, with the plant dangling directly above a water tank where leaves have been steadily falling in over the years, giving the water in the tank a bright green hue.
In the first room and on the first floor, a flimsy but cleverly improvised mechanism allows ceramic ears inside bottles to be dipped in and out of water using a handle. The bottles are lit from behind by candles hanging on the bottles lighting up the green water. Upstairs, a hollowed out face made of river clay rests on a stand, its gaping mouth allowing water droplets coming from a plastic bottle hanging on the ceiling to drip through. Below, the collected water cascades once more, dissolving a pile of clay ears on the floor underneath.
Standing in the dark, cold, and confined space, you feel a heightened sense of caution and perhaps even fear. This tension sharpens your senses, making the crackling of the fire and the dripping of water seem intensely ominous. A cord with a handle tempts you to pull it, though you don't know what will happen. Suddenly, all the ears inside the bottle drop into the water simultaneously, evoking a feeling that is both repulsive and satisfying. It's as if you've accidentally entered a house used for witchcraft, confronting your own superstitions. A process is clearly happening, but its purpose seems purely spiritual. The ears might be holding secrets or listening to your thoughts, while the water, acting like the lifeblood of the house, seems to cleanse or charge them, much like blood used in tribal rituals.
